Canada Bans Crypto Donations in Political Funding Over Traceability Concerns
Canada's federal government has moved to ban cryptocurrency donations in political financing through Bill C-25, the Strong and Free Elections Act. The legislation classifies crypto alongside money orders and prepaid cards as high-risk payment methods due to traceability challenges. The ban applies universally across federal political entities—including parties, candidates, and third-party advertisers.
The measure follows recommendations from a public inquiry into foreign electoral interference and aligns with Canada's intensified crackdown on financial crime. FINTRAC, the nation's financial watchdog, has revoked 47 crypto-related MSB registrations this year for AML violations—part of 50 total enforcement actions against money service businesses.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne framed the policy as part of a sustained offensive against money laundering, pledging to maintain enforcement momentum. The move reflects global regulatory trends scrutinizing crypto's role in opaque financial flows while avoiding broader prohibitions on digital asset use.
